Abstract Mosaic for Sketch – Art Café, Boxpark Jumeirah
An Art-Themed Entry Apron, For a Local Cafe
An Artful Entrance
Sketch Art Café sits along Al Wasl Road in Jumeirah, within Boxpark’s long, open stretch of containers, walkways, and street-facing storefronts.
A custom-designed entry apron in mosaic, welcomes visitors and hints at the café’s playful, art-led spirit. Sketch itself carries an informal character and from the beginning of our collaboration with Saif Al Falasi, it was clear that this space needed to register the act of entering as something intentional.
Vision Behind the Design
Entry aprons & Typography mosaics are a specialty of MEC Artworks, where the studio combines traditional mosaic techniques with contemporary approaches.
Compared with others in our catalog, this was the most playful one we’ve made. As visitors step across it, the mosaic reveals its abstract energy. Strokes of red and yellow, scattered symbols, and the “Dubai 2025” text all come together in an animated composition.
Design Process
At MEC Studio, the design began with the ground itself as the primary emotional vehicle. Warm, light-toned tesserae—off-white, cream, pale beige, and soft browns—were arranged in subtle swirling and radiating patterns. This foundation introduces softness and motion without competing with the layered symbols, allowing the composition to breathe.
By creating a calm, neutral backdrop, the studio ensured that the more saturated elements—red, blue, and black—could read with clarity and presence, defining form and rhythm against the subtle ground.
Designing a Visual Language Underfoot
Black lines provide structural weight, and small touches of yellow and ochre punctuate the surface, activating forms without overwhelming them. Against the matte stone, the glossy tesserae articulate a clear distinction between figure and ground, atmosphere and signal, reinforcing both materiality and conceptual intent.

A Lasting Impression
A thick black curved line forms a protective enclosure around the hand-drawn, irregular “CASA” lettering, while a nearby black inscription, “Dubai 2025,” situates the work in time and place.
This custom mosaic was a fun artistic exercise for the studio, letting us experiment with abstraction in a way we hadn’t tried before. The client was thrilled with the result, and it now brings a lively, distinctive touch to their cafe.
