Celestial Glass Art—Custom Shower Wall Mosaic in England
Crafted from hand-crafted glass mosaics, these moisture-resistant custom tiles added a vibrant touch of turquoise and deep oceanic blues, along with shimmering golden tones. This celestial art comprising of calming blue waves, the stars and the moon, serves as a timeless artwork that harmonizes with Martin’s existing green tiles.
Client Brief
The project presented to us by Martin seemed like a very interesting one. Our client Martin already had some green tiles on the side walls of his bathroom. What he wanted was essentially a custom feature wall that complemented those green tiles and could blend with them to create a striking impact. Upon going through our Celestial Catalogue, Martin told us that he really liked the Eternal Universe Mosaic and The Radiant Night Sky Mural. The goal was transforming our client’s current bathroom into a soothing retreat. Based on the instructions received from Martin, MEC had to build a custom shower wall that was going to be around two meters wide and high.
Inspiration Moodboard
To start the creative process, we had to finalise the inspiration moodboard first. It encapsulated celestial art followed by deep blues and golden sunshine; this astronomy coded artwork was a soothing blend of the sun, stars, and blue waves. We wanted to ensure that this mosaic design would go well with Martin’s green tiles.
When we were working on the inspiration moodboard, we paid special attention to creating rich textures and maximising the beautiful reflectivity of glass mosaic, along with natural, flowing waves that brought out a memorable starry night.
Design Development
Keeping in mind that the shower wall was quite tall as well as wide, we had to come up with something that was as big while also coming off as cozy. Therefore, during the design development phase, it was crucial to get the size and layout right. Elegant, soft , and organic waves were to be formed with intense dark blue and light blue glass, resulting in a swirling galaxy. A sophisticated gold toned sun was crafted and adjusted to the right side in order to balance out everything. We had to be very careful with the sizes of the star and the moon as the goal was to make the final artwork look perfect from every angle.
Initial sketches & 2D and 3D Visualisations
Before getting into the actual mosaic cutting process, we had to map out the artwork with initial sketches. Pencil drawings help us ensure that the final look does not look awkward or stiff. After deciding the placement of the prominent sun and the smaller stars, the sketches were shared with Martin. This process helped us refine the design until it felt completely organic and unique.
Now, it was time to move towards providing detailed 2D layout and 3D images of the shower wall artwork. What this step does is that it removes any anxiety that our client might have in terms of how the final artwork would look like. When you get to see the 3D images of exactly how the final design would look, it gives you a very strong sense of contentment. Once Martin was able to see how the celestial pattern would appear on the wall in his bathroom, he knew that the mosaic piece would look great in reality.
Color Palette and Materials
MEC chose the most premium glass mosaics; glass does a wonderful job in terms of withstanding water and humid conditions. As they are shiny in nature, these tiles add movement to the space upon their interaction with natural sunlight. With reference to the main background, our team picked a mixture of aqua blue, navy blue, and turquoise. When we incorporated golden tones over it, the sunbursts and stars began to stand out. When the glass would catch light, there would be shifts in the tones of these mosaic pieces, making the artwork very immersive.
Fabrication photos, Installation, and Post Delivery Support
Piece by piece, our highly skilled artisans had truly put their all into bringing Martin’s vision to life. All the glass mosaic pieces were carefully placed onto flexible mesh sheets. During this period, we also made sure that the final installation would fully match the design that was approved. This was done through a clear grid mapping system. As every piece is manually cut, the final artwork is always uniquely yours.
Once the celestial glass art was ready, we transferred it to smaller mesh-backed panels. We also send installation guidelines to make that process easier. To make sure that everything is assembled properly, MEC Artworks remains very active from the beginning of the project till the very end, in case any post-delivery issues are encountered. The mosaic designs that we create last for decades to come.
FAQs
How do you make sure the new mosaic matches the tiles I already have?
During the design phase, MEC analyses all the details very closely. A lot of time is spent, and many conversations take place during this stage. In this particular project, green tiles were already there in Martin’s bathroom. We made sure to come up with an inspiration mood board and digital images to make sure that the deep blue and gold glass would blend with the earthy vibe.
What materials work best for a custom shower wall?
Honestly, glass is the best choice in this context. Our high-end and handcrafted glass can easily handle water and high levels of moisture. Being reflective in nature, glass tends to add a shimmery affect upon its interaction with natural light.
Can I see what the artwork will look like before you build it?
Yes, of course. This is why we always start with the initial drawings first. After that, 2D and 3D blueprints are offered. During this period, you can check the colors, scale, and flow of the design before our workshop team starts cutting the glass pieces.
How do you ship and install such a massive glass mural?
To make the process smooth, the team at MEC places the mosaic pieces onto a flexible mesh sheets. They are then packed into smaller numbered sections. You will receive them right at your doorstep along with an installation guideline that we have made specifically for you.
