── THE SETTING

Ceiling and Wall Mosaics: Beside a Dallas Swimming Pool

A private swimming pool created the setting for this large-scale mosaic mural. Instead of limiting the artwork to one feature wall, the available architecture allowed the composition to extend vertically and overhead. The wall became the main canvas for the figurative scene, while the ceiling created another layer of visual depth. Together, the two surfaces surround the pool with classical imagery and make the artwork visible from changing viewpoints. This approach is particularly relevant to large residential spaces where walls, vaulted ceilings, pool rooms, and other architectural features can become part of the artwork itself.

Inspired by The School of Athens, the project shows how Renaissance imagery can be translated into a permanent architectural installation rather than displayed as conventional framed art.

“The School of Athens finds a new expression through the permanence and detail of mosaic art.”

How We Turned the School of Athens Into Mosaic Artwork

Translating The School of Athens, The Last Supper, & other classical artworks into mosaic required a different approach from reproducing an image on a flat surface. The composition contains figures, gestures, garments, architectural forms, perspective, shadows, and subtle changes in colour. Each of these elements had to be considered through the language of mosaic. The School of Athens mosaic brings together:

  • Detailed figurative compositions
  • Classical architectural forms
  • Carefully interpreted faces and garments
  • Rich blue, gold, red, and natural tones
  • Fine detailing within important focal areas
  • Artwork extending across walls and ceiling

The scale also changes how the piece is experienced. From a distance, the architecture and groups of figures define the composition. From closer viewpoints, individual tesserae, facial details, clothing, and colour transitions become more visible. For UAE residences, this type of classical mosaic design can also be developed for double-height walls, indoor pools, private wellness areas, entrance halls, and statement ceilings.

A Renaissance Composition Reimagined in Mosaic

For this private residence, the design began with the architecture itself. MEC Artworks designers considered the walls, ceiling, proportions, and viewing angles around the pool to ensure the mosaic felt naturally connected to the space. The Renaissance composition was then adapted to the existing architecture, with figures, perspective, shadows, and color transitions interpreted tessera by tessera. This approach is equally suited to distinctive private residences and luxury villas across the UAE, where art is often designed as part of the architecture. Unlike a painted mural or fresco, a mosaic mural builds imagery piece by piece, requiring careful material selection and precise placement.

“The artwork was developed to be experienced around the space, not from a single viewpoint.” — MEC Artworks Design Team

── MUSEUM GRADE CRAFTSMANSHIP

How a Museum Grade Mosaic Mural Is Made

MEC Artworks has been creating architectural mosaics since 1979. For complex commissions, our designers and artisans consider how the original artwork can be translated into tesserae without losing the movement, proportion, and important details that give the composition its identity.

Artwork Study

The composition is reviewed to understand its principal figures, perspective, architectural elements, colour relationships, and focal details.

Architectural Scaling

The artwork is adapted to suit the dimensions and proportions of the walls and ceiling rather than simply enlarging the original image.

Figurative Detailing

Faces, garments, gestures, shadows, and other intricate areas are planned with greater attention to tessera placement.

Wall and Ceiling Integration

The wall mosaic and ceiling mosaic are developed to read as connected parts of the same architectural composition.

Hand-Cut Fabrication

Artisans build the imagery through carefully placed tesserae, controlling direction, tonal transitions, lines, and movement throughout the scene.

Installation Mapping

The large composition is organised into mapped sections to help maintain alignment and continuity when installed on site.
