Client Brief for This Abstract Mosaic
Our client, who is the owner of a luxury property in Jumeirah Islands, Dubai, decided to refurbish their pool through MEC Artworks after viewing our pool mosaic portfolio.
First Within, A UK-based interior design firm, commissioned us for this project.
Our client wanted something in bright hues. Something different from the usual blue pool mosaics. Initially, our design team wanted to go with green. Consequently, First Within told us that our client wanted to make a more daring statement in reds.
The design pattern was to be of an abstract nature. They wanted a striking difference between the pool base colour and the pattern on it.
The material mostly used in pool mosaics in the GCC is glass. We suggested glass as the material for this pool mosaic too.
We worked closely with First Within throughout the crafting and installation of this project.
Inspiration for This Pool Mosaic
Our client just required an abstract pattern. The rest of the design creation was left to us.
Our design team started working on a pixelated organic design. One tile to one pixel in the digital pattern. The pattern soon developed into an interesting biophilic pattern, but in oranges and reds.
Patterns and curves symbolising life forms, growing vines, and the waves created in water. Other shapes and forms were left up to the viewer’s imagination.
An ivory background was given to the pattern so that each shape was more visible through the water too.
The principal shades that were used were Burgundy, Garnet Red, Terracotta, Burnt Orange, Coral, and Tangerine Orange.
The amazing factor was that these shades did not cover all the colours used in the actual mosaic. All shades in between this range also became part of this gorgeous confection.

Design & Development
Colour Hues
The main shades that our design team decided on were Burgundy, Garnet Red, Terracotta, Burnt Orange, Coral, and Tangerine Orange. However, during crafting all shades in between these colours also became part of the pool.
Design Pattern
The design pattern included organic-looking forms like plants and animals of different shapes. Other elements of nature were also symbolised, like waves in water and the form of dunes in the desert. Other patterns were left up to the viewer’s fancy.
Material Selection
This was the easy part. Glass is the principal choice for luxury pool mosaics in Dubai and the Gulf countries. Our client chose the same. Resistant to water and sunlight damage, it is an excellent choice for pools in the extreme weather experienced in this area.
Crafting this Abstraction
Pixelated pools follow the rule of one tessera to one pixel. In the actual crafting, our craftsmen do not follow this rule to the dot. This makes the resulting pattern even more unique and beautiful than as passed on by the designers.
Our skilled craftsmen followed the andamento style, going with the flow of the pattern as they crafted. This technique makes the patterns alive.
The completed mosaic looked as if it was moving. Once the pool was filled, the patterns seemed to sway and flow like the water it was in.
Each tessera was hand-cut and moulded specially to fit into the abstract organic forms.
The unavoidable imperfections, which are a result of hand-crafted art, further helped to pronounce the beauty of this mosaic.
A Bold Beauty
The completed mosaic looked like a diva in all its magnificent shades.
Pool mosaics are generally crafted in blues and may depict sea life or mildly shaded abstractions.
This pool mosaic was one of the few of its kind. We are proud to say that First Within communicated that it was a resounding success with our client.

Will the red and orange glass colours fade when exposed to Dubai sunlight and pool chemicals?
High-quality glass mosaic is highly resistant to UV exposure, moisture, and normal pool chemicals. For a pool installation, the glass, adhesive, grout, and installation system should all be selected specifically for submerged and outdoor conditions to help preserve the colours and finish over time.
