The Story of These Glass Egrets
Liam, our client, approached us with a vision for the depiction of the Snowy Egret in its natural habitat.
The Snowy Egret is a gorgeous white coloured bird with slender black legs, a long, sharp black bill and yellow-orange feet, which are also known as the ‘golden slippers’ of the bird.
This bird is found in the wilds of North America and is very rarely seen in cities and crowded areas.
The Snowy Egret symbolises several attributes, including purity, focus and perseverance.
It is also a beautiful sight to behold with its sleek looks, graceful movements and predatory hunting style.
A resident of Chicago, Illinois, Liam wanted a nature-inspired mural in his luxury interior. After deliberating between a few other options, he chose the Snowy Egret.
A Great Addition to Luxury Interiors
Crafted in premium hand-cut glass, this bird mural can be a great addition to any luxury interior. Installed as a feature wall, it can command the entire decor of the room.
The main shades used for the crafting of the reeds and vegetation are Turquoise, Aqua, Teal Green and Sky to Cobalt Blue.
These natural colours are an amazing way to set a fresh and light tone to a busy space.
The bird itself has been crafted in Warm Whites, with a Deep Black coloured tile for its bill and legs. Small bright coloured additions were made with yellow-orange for the ‘golden slippers’ of this bird.
The combination of all these luxury shades resulted in a breathtakingly beautiful depiction of the Egret.
Gliding effortlessly through water plants as it searches for its prey, the mosaic gives a strong message of purpose and effort in life.

Design & Development
The design phase was smooth and easy as we had a rough picture of what our client wanted for their bespoke custom mosaic. The idea just needed finishing touches.
Concept Phase
The concept phase took a shorter time as our client already gave us a clear idea of the image he wanted. The Snowy Egret in its natural surroundings. What was left to be decided was exactly what the surroundings would be. The number of birds displayed had to be determined too.
Design & Layout
Our design team decided upon two egrets in different postures. One, ready to take off and the second one in flight. The team first considered a scene with a water body and the egrets in it. Later, they changed that as egrets moving amongst reeds looked more natural and beautiful.
Materials & Palettes
MEC Artworks suggested hand-cut glass, and our client, Liam, agreed. The colours ranged from Turquoise, Aqua, Teal Green and Sky to Cobalt Blue for the reeds and other vegetation. Warm Whites, Deep Black and Yellow-Orange for the bird’s body.
Crafting the Egret in Glass
With the idea fully developed and the colour palettes in place, the project was passed on to our talented craftsmen.
Different and varied shapes of tesserae were needed in the crafting of this mosaic mural.
Each piece was cut to fit in its intended space. Colour hues were mixed in such a way that the flow of one shade to another was almost seamless.
Around the plants, a hint of bluish green was also given at the bottom and it was left to the viewer’s imagination to decide whether or not water had been depicted in the picture.
The egrets were well placed and had an air of secrecy to them. Almost as if they were hidden amongst the reeds, waiting for their unsuspecting prey.
