A 1970s-Inspired Kitchen Remodel – Countertop Base Mosaic for Carolyn
A bold “WOW” mosaic installation designed for a kitchen countertop base, using a refined color palette and enamel tile surface.
A Wraparound Kitchen Installation
This project was a close collaboration with our client Carolyn, alongside designer Gillian Pinchin of Wondernose.
At MEC, we regularly translate brand-specific logos and typographic identities into mosaic—across floors, walls, and large-scale signage. This project introduced a different condition: a continuous, wraparound typography mosaic integrated into a kitchen counter base, requiring the design to resolve seamlessly across corners while remaining legible from multiple viewpoints.
The brief was precise: create a 70s-inspired typographic feature that felt bold but not overpowering.
The typography was custom-developed. We ran multiple color iterations in the lab—testing tones against natural light and surrounding finishes—refining the palette until the contrast felt balanced.
Vision Behind the Design
Gillian had an idea of the color palette and overall look. However, translating that vision into actual materials required further development.
Standard glass mosaic ranges did not provide the exact tones needed.
This project involved multiple iterations focused on color accuracy and material selection, ensuring the final piece resonated with the specific historical aesthetic the clients envisioned.
The lettering isn’t from a standard font, it was drawn specifically for the mosaic. It uses a tall, condensed style designed to work within a 10×10 mm tile grid, with consistent stroke widths and curves throughout.
Design Process
At MEC, we regularly combine different tools—renders, physical sampling, and layout studies—to ensure alignment before production begins.
Phase 1: Concept Development
Initial ceramic samples were scrutinized for accuracy. Carolyn noted that the “antique” matches needed to be slightly browner, while the “Caspian Sea” equivalents required a more pronounced green hue. To achieve this level of specificity, we explored two distinct paths:
Option A: Sourcing and shipping external Fireclay tiles (antique matte and Caspian Sea matte).
Option B: Developing a custom mosaic using MEC’s internal ranges.
After comparing the cost and logistical impact, it was determined that the price difference was not substantial, but internal refinement offered better quality control for the intricate typography.
Phase 2: Visualization
Once suitable materials were identified, the design was tested in context. Gillian, the project designer, reviewed visual layouts prepared to show how the mosaic would appear within the kitchen.
Phase 3: Material Strategy & Fabrication
To meet the required color depth and finish, our design consultant, Nada, introduced the Opus range—12mm colored sintered glass enamel mosaic tiles. This proved to be the turning point of the project.
Specifically, the selection of EW134 (Tan) for the background and EW75 (Dark Blue) for the letters.
Assembling the Statement
The full panel is about two meters wide, with bold blue letters set against a warm terracotta background, giving it strong contrast so it’s easy to read from a distance.
As this project was supplied for installation at the client’s location, the focus during this stage was on ensuring accuracy and ease of placement.
The mosaic was assembled in sections to maintain:
- Correct alignment of the typography
- Even spacing between letters
- Consistency with the approved layout
Clear installation guidance was provided to ensure the design would be positioned correctly on-site.
A Lasting Impression
The completed mosaic introduces a defined focal point within the kitchen without relying on complex imagery. Its impact comes from clarity in layout and consistency in material.
This project reflects a category of work we regularly produce at MEC, including:
Custom typography and logo mosaics for residential spaces
Branded installations for retail environments
Large-scale signage and identity features for international luxury hospitality projects
Smaller applications such as café logos and entryway signage
Across all of these, the approach remains consistent—resolving design and material decisions before production to ensure accurate results.

We adapt letterforms to suit the mosaic grid system while preserving readability, cultural integrity, and design balance—particularly for projects in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and government-related developments.
How long does a custom mosaic logo or typography project take?
Timelines vary depending on complexity, but typically:
- Design development & sampling: 2–4 weeks
- Material approval: 1–2 weeks
