Evelyn’s London Residence — A Multi-Space Mosaic of Cobalt Swirls & Terracotta Orbs

A bespoke architectural mosaic project that reimagined a single cosmic-inspired design from MEC Artworks’ Lulu Collection into four interconnected installations across a private London residence.

One Colorful Pattern for Four Spaces

For this private London project, the client asked us to do something unique: take a single, flowing mosaic pattern titled “The Astral Flux” and stretch it across four different rooms. The home itself is bright and modern, featuring clean white walls and beautiful, organic shapes. For any successful interior design project, understanding the mood board is essential.

Our main challenge wasn’t just making the artwork fit. It was breaking one continuous design apart so it worked perfectly in four completely different spaces, without losing its overall identity.

Instead of treating these as four separate projects, we designed a single fluid system that adapts to each room’s specific layout and vibe:

  • The Curved Staircase: A dramatic vertical space where the bold red, blue, and terracotta swirls sweep upward, following the natural curve of the wall and matching your movement as you walk up the stairs.
  • The Main Bathroom: An immersive, spa-like space where the colorful pattern wraps around multiple surfaces to make the entire room feel connected and relaxing.
  • The Powder Room: A small, intimate space where the mosaic is viewed from up close, requiring us to pack lots of fine detail into a tighter, more compact area.
  • The Floor Inlay: A busy hallway zone where the graphic lines of the mosaic act as a visual pathway, subtly guiding youc from one room to the next.

By treating the house as one big canvas, the final mosaic doesn’t look like art just hung on a wall. Instead, it feels like a colorful, continuous thread built right into the architecture of the home.

Vision Behind the Design

The original Astral Flux design is built around movement. It uses flowing curves, layered colour fields, and orbital-like space-art formations that suggest constant motion. The palette shifts between deep blues, warm terracotta tones, emerald greens, and softer peach and blush accents.

During the design process, the client also requested subtle refinement in colour intensity, particularly in warmer and lighter tones. We responded by carefully adjusting balance across the palette so that no single room felt visually flat or overly heavy.

Iridescent glass elements were introduced selectively to respond to London’s shifting natural light, allowing certain areas of the mosaic to change character throughout the day.

Design Process

Translating The Astral Flux into a home environment required more than resizing the artwork. Every space demanded structural reinterpretation.

The bathroom required continuity across multiple surfaces, including vertical walls, a bathtub face, and flooring. The staircase required upward visual flow that followed physical movement. The powder room required compression of detail into a small viewing distance. The floor inlay needed to function as a guiding visual path rather than a fixed image.

To solve this, the design was restructured into modular flow systems rather than a single fixed composition. This meant adjusting:

  • The spacing between visual clusters
  • The direction of movement in each room
  • The density of colour depending on viewing distance
  • The scale of detail based on how close or far the viewer would be

Handcrafted Production Process

Once the design direction was finalised, the entire mosaic was produced by hand in the MEC workshop.

Each section was assembled tile by tile onto mesh backing. This allowed the artwork to be divided into installation-ready panels while still preserving directional flow across the composition.

Because the design was not static but movement-based, the placement of each tessera mattered. Curves had to remain fluid across panel breaks, and colour transitions had to remain uninterrupted when reassembled on-site.

Special attention was given to:

  • Maintaining continuity across curved segments
  • Preserving flow direction between separate sheets
  • Ensuring colour gradients did not “step” or break visually

Once completed, the mosaic was divided into mapped installation sections and prepared for international shipment to London.

As part of our process, spare tesserae were included for installation flexibility and future maintenance. Additional colour-specific tiles were also provided to allow fine adjustments during on-site fitting.

A Lasting Impression

Once installed, The Astral Flux no longer reads as a single artwork placed in a home. Instead, it operates more like a visual thread running through different architectural moments.

In the bathroom, the mosaic feels immersive and enveloping. In the powder room, it becomes more focused and detail-driven. On the staircase, it becomes directional and upward-moving. In the transitional floor area, it acts as a subtle guide that connects spaces.

What ties everything together is rhythm. The same visual language appears in different forms depending on where you are in the home.

The result is a residence where the mosaic is not an object on the surface of architecture, but something that feels embedded within it—responding to structure, light, and movement as you move through the space.

FAQs

In UAE luxury homes—especially villas in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah—bespoke mosaic installations are often used as architectural features rather than simple decoration. They are commonly integrated into double-height staircases, grand bathrooms, majlis areas, and statement corridors. In projects like The Astral Flux, the mosaic becomes part of the spatial architecture itself, flowing across multiple rooms to create a unified interior identity throughout the villa.

Yes. In UAE luxury residences, mosaics are frequently used in spa-style bathrooms, hammams, and ensuite wet areas. Because these spaces often emphasize luxury finishes such as marble, gold detailing, and ambient lighting, glass mosaics work particularly well due to their reflective and light-enhancing qualities.

For wet zones, we typically use a combination of matte and gloss finishes to balance slip resistance, durability, and visual depth, while ensuring full waterproofing with advanced adhesive systems suited for humid environments.

Yes. UAE interiors often feature rich material palettes such as Calacatta marble, onyx stone, brushed gold metals, and high-gloss lacquer finishes. Mosaic designs are carefully adjusted to complement these materials rather than compete with them.

For example, warmer terracotta and amber tones may be used alongside gold detailing, while cooler blues and greens can be balanced with white marble interiors. Iridescent glass is often introduced to echo metallic finishes commonly found in luxury UAE interiors.

For UAE projects, installation is typically coordinated with local contractors while the design and fabrication are handled internationally. Each mosaic is pre-assembled in mesh-mounted sections and mapped precisely to architectural drawings.

We provide detailed installation documentation, including grid layouts and sequencing guides, and offer remote or on-site coordination depending on project scale. This ensures accuracy during installation, especially in large villas where surfaces may span multiple floors or curved architectural elements.
