How Ripples and Movement Make These Hand-Cut Figures Come Alive
The pool for which this mosaic was destined was divided into four sections, with the depth increasing in each successive section. The colour of choice for this pool was shades of blue, ranging from light to deep.
The lighter shades started at the shallow end of the pool, which ultimately changed to darker hues as the depth of the pool increased. The diver figures were placed strategically in places with lighter shade so that they would stand out.
The light play with this premium hand-cut glass mosaic was the crowning feature of its beauty. The moving water, the divers interwoven in the abstraction, and the illuminating effect of light on the mosaic made the diver figures look like they were actually moving through the waters.

── HOW IT IS MADE
Behind the Scenes: From Early Sketches to the Final Installed Tile
Our design team at MEC explored a variety of ideas, playing with different shades, materials and the number of diver figures to come up with the best combination.
Measuring the Pool Depth and Layout
The depth of the pool was measured at different points and its layout was assessed to decide the number of shades of blue that would be needed.
Mapping Out the Water Flow and Shapes
The movement of water on the tiles was made to look like glistening blue diamonds on the floor of the pool with divers swimming in and out of the gems.
Sizing the Figures to Match the Pool Size
Varying sizes and numbers of diver figures were used in each digital render to reach the size and number of divers that felt right.
Blending the Colours Seamlessly
The pool had four different depth areas in different shades of blue. They were blended so that one gave way to the other in the most natural style.
Hand-Cutting the Glass in the Workshop
Each hand-cut piece of tesserae was made to fit in and around the figurines in a seamless manner.
Testing How the Tiles Shimmer in Bright Sun
A small batch of tesserae was tested in real time to see how the different shades of blue shone in bright sunlight.
