Bringing NY-Based Artist Alex Proba’s Playful Designs into Mosaic Form
MEC was honored to collaborate with her to translate her unique, fluid geometries into this custom mosaic feature.
Expression Through Material
Alex is a true multidisciplinary force who has already proven her language works across almost any medium, from the intricate weave of textiles to the bold, immersive scale of handcrafted tile pools.
This project is the first of many collaborations we’ll be launching together as we continue to find new, unexpected ways to bring her world into yours.

Vision Behind the Design
Alex Proba’s work exists at the intersection of art and environment, appearing across global collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Vogue Italia.
Her visual language is instantly recognizable: playful, abstract, and emotionally resonant.
For this project, the intention was not to confine that language, but to give it a new dimension.
Rather than treating the surface as a backdrop, this installation positions the artwork as an active, living element within the space.
Design Process
The composition is built around free-flowing forms that appear to move across the surface. Translating these into mosaic required careful shaping to avoid rigidity.
A project of this nature relies on both technical planning and artisanal execution.
Phase 1: Interpreting the Artwork
We began by translating the original composition into a detailed digital layout. This allowed us to map every curve, intersection, and color field—ensuring accuracy before fabrication began.
Phase 2: Material Exploration & Fabrication
Once approved, the design moved into production.
- Each tile was hand-cut to follow the natural flow of the forms
- Color selections were refined to achieve exact tonal matches
- Tile placement was adjusted to maintain softness and continuity
This stage required a deep understanding of both the material and the artist’s intent.
Phase 3: Precision Execution
The artwork was fabricated in sections to ensure ease of installation without disrupting the composition. Each panel was carefully aligned so that, once assembled, the piece reads as a single uninterrupted surface.
The Final Result: A Living Surface
The completed mosaic holds a unique presence. What begins as a bold visual statement gradually reveals layers of detail upon closer inspection.
Unlike painted surfaces or printed artworks, this mosaic is built to last—retaining its vibrancy and integrity over time while continuing to evolve with its surroundings.
At MEC, we are proud to continue our ongoing collaboration with Studio Proba, serving as the bridge between her fluid digital visions and the permanent world of architectural art.
This collaboration represents a shift in how mosaic is perceived—not just as a decorative finish, but as a medium for contemporary artistic expression.
By working with an artist whose practice spans global platforms and industries, we’ve explored how traditional craftsmanship can engage with modern design in meaningful ways.
A Lasting Impression
Every project we take on is approached as a true design collaboration rather than a fixed transaction. Our team works closely with artists, designers, and clients to interpret, refine, and—when needed—revisit the composition so it performs beautifully in mosaic form.
With a dedicated in-house design consultancy, global production capabilities, and experience delivering projects worldwide, we’re able to support clients from concept through to installation—wherever they are. This structure allows us to maintain both creative integrity and efficiency, offering a level of detail and craftsmanship that remains accessible through competitive pricing.
FAQs
Do you offer mosaic services across the UAE or only in specific emirates?
We deliver and install mosaics across all emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and beyond. Whether the project is a private residence, hospitality space, or large-scale public installation, we coordinate logistics and installation to ensure a seamless process from production to site.
Can mosaics be installed in outdoor areas like pools, facades, or gardens in the UAE climate?
Yes—our mosaics are specifically engineered to perform in the region’s conditions. From pool interiors in Palm Jumeirah villas to large exterior facades in Saadiyat Island, we select materials and adhesives that withstand high temperatures, UV exposure, and humidity without compromising longevity or color integrity.
Do you work with interior designers and architects on custom projects?
Absolutely. We regularly collaborate with design studios and architects across the UAE. Our in-house design consultancy supports the process from early concept stages through to fabrication, helping translate drawings, renders, or even loose ideas into fully resolved mosaic designs.
What types of spaces are mosaics suitable for?
Mosaics are incredibly versatile and can be applied across residential, commercial, and hospitality settings. In the UAE, we commonly work on luxury villas in Emirates Hills, hotel projects in Downtown Dubai, and cultural or public spaces in Aljada. Each project is tailored to suit the scale, function, and aesthetic of the space.
How long does a typical mosaic project take in the UAE?
Timelines vary depending on size and complexity, but most projects move through design, fabrication, and delivery in clearly defined phases. We provide structured timelines from the outset and remain closely involved throughout, ensuring coordination with contractors and site teams across the UAE.
