Moroccan-Style Villa: Zellige Pattern Pool & Wall Feature

A handcrafted zellige-inspired pool paired with a powder room feature wall, bringing Moroccan language into a contemporary villa setting.

A Courtyard Villa in Moroccan Expression

In this project, we blended traditional Moroccan patterns with a contemporary design language, balancing heritage with modern restraint. This reflects a broader shift noted by Elle Decoration, where 2026 interiors favour craftsmanship, and layered materiality over minimal perfection.

The scope of work centered on two signature installations: a courtyard pool featuring geometric Zellige patterns that ground the outdoor space, and a bespoke botanical mosaic mural that transforms the interior powder room into a lush sanctuary.

Vision Behind the Design

Modern Zellige-style tilework has become a staple in high-end residential design. There is a clear market shift toward these intricate, multi-tonal patterns that offer more depth than standard pool finishes.

Zellige-inspired collections like this form part of MEC’s broader Moroccan material library, developed across a range of residential and architectural projects.

We used a palette of emerald and teal glass to create a submerged geometric pattern.

And for the villa’s powder room, we installed a floor-to-ceiling mosaic mural featuring lush tropical foliage, within a recessed archway.

Design Process

At MEC, we regularly bridge traditional craft references with engineered mosaic systems, ensuring both aesthetic fidelity and long-term performance.

Phase 1: Material Direction

The initial direction explored authentic zellige references—irregular glaze shifts, surface variation, and deep tonal blues and greens. However, for pool integration, pure traditional clay zellige was not suitable for full submersion and long-term water exposure.

We therefore developed a hybrid approach using high-performance mosaic systems that could replicate the visual rhythm of zellige while meeting technical requirements for pool tiling.

Phase 2: Colour & Surface Refinement

Multiple sampling rounds were conducted to refine tone density, glaze variation, and reflectivity under natural courtyard lighting. The objective was to preserve the “alive” quality of zellige while ensuring visual consistency across large surface areas.

Phase 3: Spatial Application

The pool interior was treated as a continuous visual field, with tile transitions carefully mapped across curves, steps, and waterlines to maintain flow.

In parallel, the powder room wall mosaic was developed as a complementary artwork piece—more expressive, slightly denser in patterning, and designed to act as a moment of visual pause within the villa.

A Contemporary Take on a Timeless Language

The finished installation brings together two expressions of the same design language—one expansive and architectural, the other intimate and artistic.

Rather than referencing Moroccan design literally, the project interprets its principles: rhythm, imperfection, material depth, and light interaction.

This approach reflects a wider direction in MEC’s work—where cultural craft references are not replicated, but re-engineered into contemporary luxury environments.

Across residential villas, hospitality spaces, and architectural commissions, MEC continues to develop mosaic systems that sit at the intersection of tradition, material science, and design precision.

Designing for the UAE: A Tailored Approach to Villa Interiors

When we take on a residential project in the UAE, we look at the villa as more than just a building—we see it as a canvas for storytelling. Our process starts with spatial recognition. We walk through the home to identify exactly where a mosaic installation will have the most impact, whether it’s a sun-drenched courtyard or a private, quiet alcove.

We don’t believe in “one size fits all.” Instead, we provide a full design consultancy that puts the client at the center of the creative process.
